Prints & Photographs Collection, DeGolyer Library

Archives Assistant, Dallas, Texas, Digitization, Photography Collections, Work Experience February 29, 2020

This past year I worked as an archives assistant at the Prints & Photographs Collection of the DeGolyer Library at the Southern Methodist University. The collection which holds over a million of photographic materials such as daguerreotypes, stereographs, gelatin silver prints, albums, negatives and postcards, supports the study of the history of Dallas, Texas, U.S. West, Mexico and transportation world-wide.

There:

  • I was responsible for organizing, re-housing and inventorying several new or existing collections, and also assisted with the overall management, preservation and care of collections.
  • Updated and created Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aids.
  • Updated the online records of numerous collections on Alma, the university’s library services platform.
  • Assisted with the promotion, installation and deinstallation of exhibits.
  • Helped researchers in the reading room and via email, and students during class visits.
  • Curated an online exhibit and created the website for it using SiteCore.
  • Also, at the Norwick Center for Digital Solutions, I digitized materials and created metadata for them following digitization and cataloging guidelines.

Organized and rehoused the Nancy Barlow stereograph collection, Ag2019.1483 which consists of over 6,500 stereographic cards, as well as many stereo viewers, lantern slides and View-Master reels. Subsequently wrote the EAD finding aid for this collection which you can read here.
Installation view of the Andy Hanson: Picturing Dallas 1960-2008, December 6, 2019 – January 29, 2020 exhibit.
Digitized 8×10-inch prints from the Andy Hanson photographs and papers, Ag2017.0004 collection using an Epson Perfection V850 Pro flatbed scanner and the SilverFast Ai Studio software.
Digitization of the Camera Work IV, 1903 photographic journal from the Jack and Beverly Wilgus History of Photography Collection, Ag2015.0005. Photographed using a Hasselblad H4D-200MS medium format DSLR camera. See the end result here.
Supervising the library’s reading room. Arnold Payne, Senior Sports Photojournalist at WFAA-TV, shooting football related materials.
Digitized motion picture films from the [Robert Yarnall Richie photograph collection, Ag1982.0234. Prepared films for scanning by examining them, adding leader to them and repairing them using a tape splicer. Scanned and edited the films with the help of nCDS Director Rob Walker, using the Cintel Scanner and DaVinci Resolve Studio software by Blackmagic Design.

It was a very busy and fulfilling year, and I enjoyed doing what I have studied and love!
